Online Harassment – How to Protect Yourself Legally

Social media use is reaching prolific levels and with it cyberbullying, harassment and online trolling is becoming more commonplace. But if you are a target what can you legally do to protect yourself? While there are no specific cyberbullying offences, this kind of conduct is considered a crime under many criminal laws, some of which include jail time as punishment. The Commonwealth Criminal Code makes it an offence to use electronic communication to harass, menace or offend.

Defamation can also be a criminal action where the offensive conduct was published and intended to cause serious harm. This could land the offender up to three years in jail or a hefty fine.
