Government still has a way to go with Australia’s cyber security

A defence think tank reports that the Australian Government is lagging behind on nearly half the reforms laid out in a plan to bolster the public service’s cyber security.

Concerns around the governments lack of transparency and slow progress to strengthen protections against costly and distributive cyber attacks have been voice by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

The ASPI has delivered it’s fist 12 month analysis on the government’s 4 your cyber defence strategy and so far only 4 of the 83 planned outcomes have been achieved.

“The constant stream of cyber events from this month’s ransomware incident to France’s election hack, highlight how serious a national challenge cybersecurity has become,” the authors said.

Despite the nearly $500 million that has been available for investment in cyber security, the ASPI states that, “unfortunately, while the government is working hard, the pace and scale of the issue is outgrowing the government’s current efforts.”
