Stay Smart Online Week

Boosting online safety one step at a time

We’re proud to be partnering with the Australian Government to raise awareness about ways people can protect themselves online during Stay Smart Online Week, 9 -13 October 2017.

The theme for the tenth annual awareness week is ‘simple steps to online safety’ to reinforce the message that all members of the public can take some simple actions to protect themselves online and to recover in the event a cyber incident occurs.

With almost nine in ten Australians now accessing the internet daily, CyberHound Chief Executive Officer John Fison said learning to be safe online is relevant to every aspect of our lives, whether at home, in the office, or at school.

“With so many important things transacted online, one simple but often overlooked safety step is regularly backing up data to an external hard drive or to the cloud,” Mr Fison said.

To coincide with Stay Smart Online Week, here are some simple tips to online safety:

Cybercrime is on the rise, now estimated to cost Australians more than $1 billion per year, with around 43 per cent of cyber-attacks targeting small businesses.

To help prevent cybercrime, care should be taken with how much is shared online as personal and financial information such as addresses, phone numbers and birthdays can be used by cyber criminals.
